D3. LOCATION
Place the device with care to its surroundings
This guideline accommodates for users to use interactive surfaces in a way that is uniform with the rest of the showroom and not obstructed by the surrounding layout.
Description

To offer a seamless experience, it is important that the surface is integrated into the showroom in a smooth and intuitive way, both in terms of software, hardware, design and location. Tabletop displays look very different from other devices mainly in regards to the large horizontal touch display, which can be hard to interact with if there is not enough room for the device. The large screen can also cause problems in the sense that ceiling lights are often reflected onto the screen, making it hard to see the interface properly. What is displayed on the screen is also easily viewed by observers, which may cause the user to feel watched. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind that the layout of the room and the way the interactive surface is placed within it can greatly impact the user experience.
Guidelines
Allow for multiple people to gather around the surface
-
As many people visit showrooms together with someone, placing the display so that visitors can easily gather around it accommodates for a smooth and inviting experience.
Let the surface spark people’s curiosity
-
Take advantage of the fact that many people have not used interactive surfaces before and are inherently curious by making sure the surface is well visible and inviting. Placing the device so that it is easily seen by people who pass by may result in more people entering to try it out.
Ensure that visitors do not feel observed
-
Many people hesitate towards using interfaces as they fear others might judge the way they interact and the choices they make. If the screen content is available for anyone to see, this risk increases.
Make sure lights are not reflected on the display
-
Lights hanging from the ceiling risk causing reflections in horizontal displays which can make it hard to see properly and cause a strain on the eyes.
